A wonderful smooth album.
A "masterpiece"
Van Beest way of playing is romantic he interprets songs on this album in his own recognizable style.
His own fine composition on this album is called
"THE GINZA SHUFLLE"
a personal 'musical painting' of the GINZA in TOKYO.

This is a lovely and gentle vocal album by Dutch singer Mariëlle Koeman, supported by her husband who happens to be a great pianist, Jos Van Beest and his trio. A very popular pair in Japan, this is actually the third CD by Koeman and Van Beest to be released by Atlier Sawano.

Koeman and company perform familiar standards (most of them on the theme of love) with relatively simple, straight-forward arrangements. Her voice is pretty and attractive.
The group's lilting sense of swing feels like warm comfort food.
Guest guitarist Walther De Graaff
adds a nice touch to several tunes.

The talented Dutch pianist Jos van Beest is well-known to fans of the Japanese label Atelier Sawano, thanks to the nine wonderful albums released over the years.

van Beest is a pianist who wears his heart on his sleeves. On piano he is very romantic, and his sentimentality is kept in check only by his good taste. He may not dazzle you with innovative approaches, but there is something inexplicably charming and uplifting about his music. And -- let's not forget this -- he swings!

This tribute to Oscar Peterson was recorded in March 2007, about nine months before the jazz giant's passing.
On this album (arguably his swingingest), van Beest plays tunes associated with Peterson ("The Summerwind," "The Girl From Ipanema"),  Peterson original ("If YOu Only Knew") and Jos' own original composition dedicated to Oscar Peterson
("Exclusively for Oscar").

This is another, very wonderful piano trio album from Jos van Beest. Mr. Peterson would have been very pleased with this very well-conceived, well-executed tribute album. Heartily recommended!

For this third recording for Atelier Sawano, Dutch pianist extraordinaire Jos Van Beest was blessed with a beautiful-sounding
Steinway Concert Grand D-274, the sound of which was beautifully recorded.
Van Beest uses notes as his paint and the keys as his brushes
and paints the landscape of his heart. It is always full of emotion and colored with sweet remembrance. Let your body sway with his gentle swing and you'll be intoxicated as if from a glass of pourriture noble.

An excerpt from bassist and producer Evert J. Woud's liner notes: "Jos' piano playing is quite extraordinary, he's got a great romantic touch combined with an amazing technique, all self-taught and a creativity that makes him sound so diffierent from most other pianists. His repertoire, consisting of songs which he wrote himself and/or chose from his large record collection (with many famous musicians like Oscar Peterson, Erroll Garner, Monty Alexander, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Shirley Horn and others), never gets selected because of technical complexity, but always carefully for reasons of beauty, melody and chord structure... For 25 years now we've been playing as a piano trio, not merely as musicians, but, at least as important, as friends and with a
lot of fun. Please listen and you will hear it."

Recorded in 1993 and issued for Japanese market by Atelier Sawano in 2000, this beautiful and romantic piano trio album impressed the Japanese audience so much that Jos Van Beest, previously unkown pianist from the Netherlands, became an overnight sensation. He would go on to record several more albums for this exclusive jazz label.

This album may not surprise you, but will make you sigh romantically. Bring your loved one near you, put up a fire, pour a glass of wine and listen to this music. Sweet and mellow, but refined and sophisticated, this album is not one of those artistically-challenged effort marketed at beginners; it has solid musicianship and real sense of swing and blues. Rare achievement, indeed.
